Over Winter Break:

-Reading: Read for 20 minutes or more per day. If you haven't yet hit Level 16 on Lexia, then try to keep up with your weekly 60 minutes. -Math: Your IXL account is back up online at last! Use it over break to keep your math skills sharp and to preview new material that we haven't covered yet. If you still haven't made it into the prestigious One-Minute Multipliers Club, then keep on practicing those multiplication facts using flashcards, websites, and printable worksheets. -Reminder: 4th graders ski and snowboard for FREE everyday at Sipapu! For Friday:

-History: Complete Steps 5, 7, and 8 on the green checklist - title page, pictures, bibliography. Rehearse reading your report out loud a few times at home so you'll be ready to present to the class. -Secret Santa: Don't forget to bring in your gift to give away. Please don't write who it's for on the outside. -Holiday Party: Kids are welcome to bring in a treat to share after our Secret Santa gift exchange (no candy or soda, please). -Geo Bee!: Congratulations to Lara, Cory, Augustin, Teresa, Irvin, and Grace for winning our class Geography Bee today. It was a tough competition! Those 6 winners will move ahead to compete against students from grades 5-8 in our School-Level Geo-Bee which will be held January 8th.

For Thursday:

-History: Complete Step #4 on the green checklist - write your Final Draft.

For Wednesday:

-History: Complete Step 3 on your green checklist, and begin Step 4. Edit your rough draft. Find and fix all the mistakes in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar. Have a parent or older sibling help you proofread your 5 paragraphs. Use a dictionary to help with spelling when you need to (there's one in the links). Then, get started on writing the final draft. Final Drafts are now due on Friday , December 19 , but you may hand yours in and present on Thursday if you're ready. -Parents, please remember that there's an early dismissal on Wednesday at 11:30.

For Tuesday:

-History: Finish writing the rough draft of your report if you didn't complete it over the weekend. Then, revise what you've written. Say more. Add new information. Expand your paragraphs.

Over the weekend:

-History: Use your outline to start writing the 5 paragraph rough draft of your Revolutionary Biography Report. Follow the "hamburger" paragraph format that you studied in class, and review steps 1 and 2 of the green checklist. Try to complete a minimum of 3 good paragraphs of the rough draft this weekend. -Secret Santa: Students drew names today for the Secret Santa gift exchange which we'll have in class next Friday, December 19. Please limits gifts to about $10.

For Friday:

-Math: Study Links 5-1, and deliver the Unit 5 Family Letter to your parents. -Spelling: Study for the quiz. -History: Outlines are due. If you checked your outline with me today, you can start writing the first couple paragraphs of your rough draft.

For Thursday:

-Spelling: Written work is due. Study for the practice quiz. -History: Outlines are due Friday, but finish yours for Thursday if you can. I'll check it, and you'll be ready to move on to starting your 5 paragraph rough draft a day sooner.

For Wednesday:

-History: Spend 15-20 minutes working on the outline for your report that you started in class today. Follow the format given on the gray outline page and Step #1 on the green checklist. Continue to read and take notes as well. -Math: SL 4-10, and review Unit 4 skills (decimal numbers to the thousandths and metric measurement) for the test. -Parents, this coming weekend and next (December 13-14 and 20-21), Taos Ski Valley is offering a day of FREE ski lessons, lift tickets, and rentals to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders! -Science: Finish up the Circulatory System quiz if you didn't finish it in class today. This is an open-notes test, so you may use your notes and all the materials you've received for this unit to help. -Two weeks ago, 4th grade achieved a goal in multiplication. To celebrate, we're having a Reward Day on Tuesday, November 25th: swimming at the TYFC in the morning, movie and popcorn in class in the afternoon. Parents are invited to come along if you'd like to help chaperone the swim. We'll leave school at about 10:00 a.m. and arrive at the pool by about 10:15 or so. We have the pool reserved from 10:30-11:30. Parents can join us for the walk or just meet us down there. Students should bring the signed Town waiver form, swimsuit, towel, and wear warm clothes for the walk. Thanks to a generous donation by Jodi Rhodus, there is no charge for swimming!

-Math: Study Links 4-3 -Taos Feeds Taos: We have a collection box for canned or boxed non-perishable food in the class to benefit families in the community who are in need this winter. Please donate if you can. -Flu Vaccines: The TCS nurse's office will be working in conjunction with the NM Department of Health to make free influenza vaccines available to the students. Both the nasal spray vaccine and the inject-able vaccine will be available. We are still working on setting the date for the administration of the vaccinations but we are expecting that it will be early in December. Students will be bringing home a packet which contains information on the influenza vaccine and a School Influenza Immunization Consent form for parents to fill out and return to the school. Please return this form by Friday, November 21st if you are interested in this service. Questions may be directed to Kathy or Guinevere at the nurse's office at 751-7222 ext 219.

Halloween!

I'm sure they'll get enough sugar out trick-or-treating on Friday evening. And please remember that we have 3 fourth graders who have severe nut allergies, so nothing with any peanuts, pecans, cashews, etc.

Weekly 4th Grade Spelling and Vocabulary Process

1. A new spelling list comes out every Monday. 2. We discuss the meaning of each word in class. Students should take notes on the definitions and keep them in their Spelling Journal. 3. Written assignment (due every Thursday): A.) Practice spelling each word by writing it 5 times in your SJ.(2 times for the weekly saying.) B.) Use each word by writing a creative sentence that shows you understand the meaning of the word. Use a dictionary to help when you need it. The sentences can be funny or fictional. Please make them interesting to read. C.) For the Spanish words, do the best you can to write simple sentences in Spanish. If you need extra help with those sentences, ask a family member, Mr. Bonner, or Senora Molina some time during the week before Thursday. NMSBA Results

-NMSBA Parent Reports: Parents, today I sent home a copy of your child's New Mexico Standards-Based Assessment results in reading, math, and writing that they took last April. Please take time to read the report and discuss the results with your son or daughter. -Have a great weekend!

First day (and first assignment!)

The first homework assignment is for students to deliver the paperwork packet to their parents to read and fill out. Parents, please fill out the school lunch application even if you don't plan to receive free or reduced lunch. We need the bus and lunch forms back ASAP. The deadline for returning all the forms is Friday, August 22nd, and I'll be collecting them in class until then.

Welcome to the TCS 4th Grade Blog!

Hello to all the incoming 4th grade students and parents at Taos Charter! I hope you've all have had a fantastic summer break. I really enjoyed mine too, but I'm glad to be back working in the classroom and excited to kick off another school year with this new group of kids. School starts Thursday, August 14th at 8:15 AM. Fourth grade supply lists are available in the office or at the TCS website in the "For Parents" section. It's not necessary for everyone to have all the supplies on the first day. Pencils, folders, and composition books are the most important items. Until then, get outside, have some fun, and make the most of your last days of break. I'll see you bright and early on Thursday! -Our TCS Welcome Back Pot-Luck is Wednesday, August 13th from 5:30 to 7:00pm if you can make it. What to bring? -It's been an excellent year. I've really enjoyed working with all the creative, diligent, kind-hearted, smart kids in this group. I'll miss seeing you all every day! Please email me a schedule of your plays and baseball/ softball games (mbonner@taoscharterschool.org), and I'll come see them if I can. Over the summer, keep your reading skills sharp and get ready for Mr. Jones' class by continuing the D.E.A.R. habit of reading for at least 20 minutes every day. Your accounts at Lexia, MobyMax, IXL Math, Spelling City, and Typing Web will all remain open and available for you to use any time during the summer break. So be sure to take advantage of your memberships at those sites when you have the time.

4th Quarter Progress Reports and Awards:

These were sent home today with students at Field Day. If you were absent today, you can pick up your final report card and individual award in the office. Just stop by and ask Teresa or Kathy.

Plans for next week:

-Tuesday is our last full classroom day of the school year. We'll be doing textbook return, cleaning out desks and cubbies, and watching the movie version of Holes if we have time. Students should bring in a cloth or paper grocery bag (or 2) so they can take home their supplies and belongings. Please check your homes for any items that need to be returned to school: textbooks, classroom library books, etc. and bring those in. Also, please send in any used cardboard boxes if you have some at home that we could have for paper recycling, and remember to bring your own lunch as school lunch will not be served on Tuesday. -Wednesday is Field Day for grades K-4 at Kit Carson Park from about 10:30 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. Students should dress for outside PE (t-shirt, shorts, sneakers, hat) and bring sunblock and a water bottle. Friday Field Trip!

-We're all set to go on our class trip to Bandelier National Monument on Friday. -Noah's Ark Pre-School Zumba-thon Fundraiser: This Saturday, April 5th, Noah's Ark is having a FUNdraiser at the Llano Quemado Community Center. They'll start with a bake sale/ Frito pie sale from 1:30pm to 4:00pm, and then the Zumbathon is from 2 - 4. For Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday:

-Math: Choose any rectangular or square room in your house, and measure the length and width of the floor to the nearest foot using a tape measure or a ruler. Make a floor-plan drawing of the room, labeling length and width. Then calculate the perimeter and area of the room, and bring that in to school on Tuesday. -NMSBA Reading Session #2 will be on Tuesday morning. Reading Session 3 will be on Wednesday, and Math Session 1 will be Thursday. During the two weeks of testing, I won't be assigning spelling lists or Study Links pages. Testing night assignments include the following: get some exercise and fresh air after school, eat a healthy dinner, get a good night's sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and be at school on-time. So that we get a true assessment of current skill-levels, please encourage your child to give their best effort on these tests. We'll be swimming at the TYFC in the morning, and have popcorn and a movie in class in the afternoon. Parents are invited to come along if you'd like to help chaperone the swim. We'll leave school at about 9:30 a.m. and arrive at the pool by about 9:50. We have the pool reserved from 10:00-11:00. Parents can join us for the walk or just meet us down there. Students should bring a swimsuit, towel, and $2 for pool admission. Bring in a G-rated dvd if you have any, and the class will vote on their choice to watch on our big screen projector after lunch.
